we are in compare today pama Murraywe’re backing captain maclean kitchenand we’re gonna make mice cookies theymust be really tiny for those littletiny pods you know so we’re going to seehow that worksand Kat McLean is a mini McLean sitterin Sydney do you have any history on therecipe were came from a line that’s beenso this mice cookie recipe was one thatI inherited from my mother and when Ispoke to my mother last night she wasn’texactly sure which relative gave it toher she knows we’ve been making it for along time yes and that it is one of themore popular ones it’s a good way to getdates into your kits if you want to bedates because yeah they’re thirdobviously they’re gonna have sugar inthem but they do have a couple of thosenatural elements to them and when youbake fresh baked cookies they are alittle bit healthier in the sense wherethey don’t have the preservatives thestore-bought stuff would have yeah so mymom is from Sydney Sydney mines that’swhere she was born and mostly raised butthey did move to Sydney you’re probablypassed away when she was a lesson andthen my father’s from placed Bank so hewas born there raised there for half hislife and then spent the rest of his lifein Antigonish yes yeah a friend familythat’s for sure yes unfortunately Iwasn’t born here but I came back herethis is where my roots are home is verysuburb and this is where we’re probablygonna stay for a little while sobeautiful my child okay so what we needto do first thing so normally one of thefirst things you want to do is of courseget all your stuff ready and this is agood recipe tough kids help with so whenit comes to stove top stuff it would bea good idea for you to be in charge ofthat whoever the person in chargesbecause there’s going to be someconstant stirring we don’t want this toburn and we’reonly going to be using the stovetop soyou don’t have to worry about preheatingthe oven for this one at all no perfectwe’re gonna be announced a few things onthere rightyou don’t need parchment paper paper waxpaper but it does come in even easieryeah it makes it easier for the kids toleave a mess in one general good pointyes so if you don’t have that whateveryou can that’s slightly nonstick youwant to place them on top of that ordirectly into the containers that youcan freeze these and if you’re gonna puta bunch of layers in there just againput some wax paper or parchment paper inbetween them then you can pull them inthere and this is why there’s some ofthem you just start to memorize itbecauseso the next thing we’re gonna do is chopup the dates so you have to do a littlebit of prep before you heat up the stoveyou buy the big pack I did buy a bigpack we only need about a half a pack ofdates for each recipe so you don’t needyou don’t need a full pack every timeyou make oh yeah if you are gonna storethe dates for later though not a badidea to double seal them because theplastic super thin so they’ll be rightout by next year yeah unless you’vedates in a regular business probably notgonna try not gonna use them read wouldyou like that’s a mass of nice catare you chasing mice with that knifewhat’s going on you went out of you andthen you came back with this yes that’sright right yes it’s not what that nightyeah I love it because I don’t have onethat big right I’ve just I need one youwant them to be small enough we’re gonnaknock them in a pot with some sugarokay our dreammarjorine if you’re worried about thecholesterol factor so yeah hope half thestate so perfect so I’m gonna starteating an egg because we are going toneed for one batch we are going to needto beat one egg and I’m also going toget a half a cup of brown sugarready Rebecca Rebecca want you to knowKat that she loves your apron yeah I dotoonice yeah so now you do beat the egg andthen mix the sugar with it yeah we wantto we want to just kind of pre beat theegg because we don’t want to have to doa whole lot of mixing once we dumpeverything into the pot oh yeah yeah Igot I got the dark spot there guys there[Music][Laughter]with your fingers take down half theshell and you excellent tip there for medon’t know about anybody else but Ididn’t know about that that’s great youknow and I’ve eaten a few shells becauseyeah I eat a lot of my cooking so yeahso yeah Wow if you’re tiny enough thedoesn’t even know it’s there as long asthey can digest them they don’t theydon’t have to worry about the bacteriaright and we’re just gonna set thataside and then we’ve got I think aquarter cup of butter or margarine soeither one works good we try not to uselard for this one the best option yourtaste everything we’re making micecookies Barbara Barbara Walter this is atotally different thing than what wewere thinking this is good this is atotally different it’s a lot cheaper tomake your snacks at home than it is tobuy them it’s an uplifting show yeahthat’s blowing my mind and when all youreally have to do apparently is to putthe part of the stock in water and letit grow do you know that okay I don’tknow Andre would you tell us about thatI don’t know what if he knows about it Isaw it on one of those Oh it was likeyou know do-it-yourself one of thosethings on Facebook yeah but yeah it wasabout gardening it was good they used totake bacon grease and strain the bacongrease it yeah it’s all grease peopledon’t think of it that way but it isactually just that right yes hereespecially about its big thing withmolasses here oh yeah I love molassescookies if somebody out there would everlike to make us some molasses cookiesthat would be great we would love to seethat being made yeah wow that’s nice wethought it would be a little boring foreverybody to be watching that part it’sself-explanatory clean handsif you live in house with dago’s yes soI made fun of that large knife that doyou gave to her and I noticed when shewas cutting that she needed that shewould have been up to her wrists anddates otherwise right that’s because Iwasn’tI don’t cut dates guys this is my issueyes that’s what I’m saying I can’t whenshe started chopping I was like oh my ohyeah definitelyno worries nope I won’t follow you rightinto the fridge there yes that would begreatso don’t go fast medium heat dependingthe co2 sometimes you want to go alittle bit less than medium heat maybeif it’s an older stove turn it up tomedium just so later slowly combiningeverything together should want to goall the melts together in the endno catch hunks big chunks of anythingit’s the left one it just maybe oh yes[Music][Music]no brand-new waiting for the writtendirections so we can make it at ourplace actually yeah I know Sinead mydaughter she would love those two lovestates all right there we go so we’reonly gonna need about a half a cup ofthese two so the next thing we’re gonnado once the butter starts to melt alongthe bottom of the pan okay yes so not awhole lot of sugar no dates are quitesweet already so yeah it is yeah betterfor you okay yes so the rice krispiesyou’re just gonna use enough to make theball was about 1/4 rice krispies so wedon’t need to add a whole bunch but wedon’t want to add too little and we’renot gonna get that nice little crunch inthe middle all right we’ve got kind ofthe dates and the rice krispies andthey’re giving to slightly differentconsistencies but they work welltogetherokay all right so according to mysisters recommendation for this amountwe are going to have a little angrythat’s the best that’s true we’re incat’s kitchen with the cat and that’swhat happens right like you smelt baitsand said I need to taste that oh my godyes okayyou’ve really upset the cat the catwould like outand you just need to message favoritelike TV or Murray’s or me and we’re justonce a week freak now but we can maybebump that up and there’s nothinginvasive the beverage it’s a cell phonenot a big camera so you can get overthat being on camera thing and give us ashoot yeah yeah so sweetyeah no no I just hope I’m notpixelating everybody too much orwhatever the heck that’s called whateverI did last time everybody was all likechoppy and because I ran too fast fromone room to another[Laughter]we were lucky for that no it’s it’s beenfun Pam and I dam and I like hanging outso it works out for us give us an excusewhy don’t you soften sort of mix in withthe next year so it could take anywherefrom three minutes to ten minutes butwe’re only making a small batch so itshouldn’t take too terribly long rightespecially with this larger pot yeahso but because of these are kind of biginstead of packing them down in there Ijust get over here no worries no no it’sfine good let’s see I don’t want it youknow what honestly I think it’s uh it’sdoing its little thing probably but herewe goyou gotta see guys once you stop you gotto see what it looks like there we goyou see that that’s what it’s supposedto be looking like that’s the brownsugar butter and egg melted and then shejust put a half a cup of dates in playfact okay it’s time and we have threecups of rice krispies measured outthat’s checking her recipe right[Music][Music]basically all the ingredients go inthere the two dry ingredients okay quickrice krispies first and then thecoconuts gonna be the last all right sowe don’t have to be super precise withthis usually my mom just said prettycarefully yep it’s kind of like ateaspoon where you use you know the oneout of the drawer not the one that theBaker’s on the big posh cooking showsuse more vanilla just gonna make itslightly sweeter okay that’s all so ifyou don’t have a sweet tooth you wantlittle less Pinellas good you don’t wantto really skimp out on the sugar toomuch because I got right right I chosebeen doing food science I used to lovehome at class that’s good I mean youknow as long as they’re still teachingthese things that they need to knowright because it’s important no worrieswell that would be a much better ideathan I’m swimming in a no time part Pamthere sorry guys just there we go kindof trying to just keep the two of youwithin the shot here ourselves but cansee what everybody’s doingyes all rightcools off pretty fast too so once youget that dumped in with the ricekrispies you don’t you want to let itcool off for maybe like 30 seconds to aminute your hands mm-hmmthis so it doesn’t actually burn youright kind of like the wax off thecandle it burns women initially hurtsyou’re hit your finger but it cools offreally really fastso do I get the rolled up prettyproperly afterwell at the cocoanut show something thatin there just start off with a bit youcan always add more later alright stillthe coop finish love a little extraresidue at the end I love coconut yeah Iwonder if it you could substituteanything for coconut would be oats justjust something right something for thekind of a car exactly right if youconsider what what the recipes arethat’s good that’s see that’s a goodtheory right there right cuz now we’regetting to that point where it’sstarting to darken a little too over thefudge no wow so dark gotcha yeah and youwill have some chunks of dates butthey’ll be soft that they won’t you knowyou notice them as Johnson yes all rightone of my favorite cookies at Christmasthey don’t know those really well I wantto try those well I don’t know what I’mgonna lose weight this uh this year atallget my body into the clothes I have fromlike before early December pre Decemberclothing scammers exactly right that’strue that’s true and it’s a great excuseto get a new wardrobe and if you don’tplan to be staying that size for longthen you can always go to the thriftstore right get yourself right tomorrowwe’ll be visiting a thrift storeWhitney Pier yes and Whitney Pier yeahyes my aunt Margie actually so yepshe’ll be she’ll be there and we’ll bedoing this at 12 o’clock tomorrow yeahit’s gonna be good while you guys aresitting there eating your lunch andyou’re looking around at all of thoseclothes that don’t fit you anymore youcan give them hut over to my aunt Margie[Laughter][Music]there we gogot a shot of that you know it was inbetween you and the you and the cat thefam’ly sorry the cat wants it now and Ireally wanted to get a picture of thatpork thanks give it Maureen has two catsyes I do they’re beautiful cats and Ihave one one orange oneI see that’s interesting though wellisn’t gonna Paris does your parrot talkyes okay okay you say that in a waythat’s like yeah I couldn’t deal withthe quaker parrot okay yeah too dry yeahyeah I just have those kitchen handsvery long yeah a lot of us once webecome mothers I think that actuallyhappens to us right[Laughter][Music]the smaller they are the less mess theymake when you’re eating them so you’rejust gonna pack them together and thenthey don’t stick like 100% together atfirst but as they dry they get more firmand they stand any better so they’rejust a little hot right now so that’swhy they’re not they’re not a hundredpercent sticking okay so see how we havethat all mixed in there we got bunch ofRice Krispies in there as well to somebeets yes yes and then our other catknocked over the parchment paper don’tbe blaming the kittygod I tell ya I’m just look at here shecomes again boy down out just don’t bedoing that that’s right right so Peggywhite from South Carolina’s watchingshe’s enjoying her show and she lovesanything made with dates so she was inWhitney Pier with her sister JeanneCrawley just this Christmas these arenot the spider cookies Rebecca theythey’re actually with dates so veryhealthy for your kids Rebecca yes that’strue you know like that’s yeah betterthan those Graham what are they calledgranola bars that we all buy right yesoh my goodness oh my goodness butter ismy favorite right so yeah it’s there’smy yeah so uh-huh they’re lots of tripsto the to the store to get more clotheswhy no you know what though I missed outon Rebecca’s workout yesterday that Ihave been starting to do because I dolike it it’s something I can do itdoesn’t hurt so actually yesterdaymissed out I felt bad about that butI’ll get back into itmyself shoveling but I’ve just beendoing so much that’s what all theexercise yeah you know what oh you’re sosweet huh yeah we’re doing all right Imean you know we’re holding their ownguys but if I keep eating things likeshe did guys happy birthday to Pam yesthat’s good though yes you needed thatthere you go cookiesWow nice and now Andre healthy for yourkids Andre is calling them spiderearnings unless somebody’s be like butI’m thinking they’re saying cookies so Isaid cookies but they’re saying spiderearnings fact and tomorrow like Mariesaid we are going to be in the pieragain as well but with a little focus onto the community businesses assistslow-income people yesthat’s gonna be great
