Try It Or Buy It: Olive Garden Breadsticks AKA Bread Heaven

Today I try something totally new. In this video I make Olive Garden breadsticks from a copycat recipe. I give you the real tea on whether you should try baking them at home or if you’re better off just buying them. Note: I am not a professional cook; I am very average. I also don’t read instructions well and make a lot fo mistakes. The end result is something I had a lot of fun creating that offers you another little glimpse into my life.

stop wait a minute hey what’s up oh heyeverybody I’m super excited becausetoday I’m trying a little bit somethingnew now I will let you know I did messup my finger so I’ve got a littlebandage here so it’s a littledistracting but you’ll get used to it soone of the things I noticed that there’sa lot of copycat recipes online and manyof them had some like really activecomment sections but what I did find inthose comment sections is whether or notthe recipe that was being suggested tome really held up to the original howhard it was to make and like wasn’t evenworth it so this got me thinking and ledto me creating what I hope will be a newseries called try it or buy it now theidea is here is that I’m going to trythese copycat recipes and give you thereal tea we’re gonna look at five keythings the first thing is cost how muchdoes this cost to make and is it evenworth it when you compare it to theoriginal you know thing you can just goby – how difficult is it is the recipeaccessible to an everyday cook like melisten I know some of you are amazingcooks but most of us we’re just everydaypeople working with what we’ve got and Iwant to know how hard it is for peoplelike ustill what is the time it takes to createthis can it really be achieved in thetime it’s listed on the recipe or doesit take a lot longer is it shorter I’mgonna break it down for you four we’regonna look at how much it looks like theoriginal do they actually look similarand then five how much does it tastelike the original now as an extra littlebonus at the end of each like littleepisode I guess we’ll have someone do ataste test and just aside which theylike better so for today’s recipe Ipicked one of my personal favorite chainrestaurant foods Olive Gardenbreadsticks I love them they’re so goodso the first thing we had to do wasfinding a copycat recipe now I foundthis recipe at food calm it was the mostreviewed and most commented on copycatrecipe we could find onlinewe took this recipe and got to work thefirst thing we needed to do was go buyingredients so off we went to the storeso as you might have guessed because Inever baked I needed to buy pretty muchevery single ingredientthis included flour sugar kosher tablesalt because I only have that fancy pinkHimalayan kind garlic powder oreganoyeast unsalted butter this cost me about$12.50 however when I got home Irealized my baking pans were too smallto make the bread sticksI have those weird a half sheet ones andI didn’t have anything to brush thebutter on to the bread so I ended upspending an extra twenty seven dollarson a silicone brush and larger bakingsheets this brought my total for theentire project to thirty nine dollarsand 52 cents I am looking pretty goodtoday I need to put on an apron so I’mjust gonna put on like this but uh it’sjust a Belgian beer makes this body sobeautiful so the first thing we have isa 1/4 cup of warm water and then alittle bag of red star activies we’regonna pour this in there and then mix itall together chee cheong key Oh Ohactually my armpits muscles kind of doeveryone it’s not like bootyI watched booty okay I’m just gonnaleave this alone now so we made theyeast mixture as we asked but it’s notprofiting and all of it should be frothyright now we were like measuring out allthe ingredients we noticed it was afrothing so that’d be right on the backof the yeast packet you’re supposed toadd sugar but the recipe does not tellme that I’m supposed to add sugar soobviously this yeast isn’t working we’regonna retry itthe bit of sugar that it suggests to usewith the little yeast packets thisthing’s so so nasty that I personallyoffended I have to do this place noisephotos it gives us like a lump thissolid and nasty lump right there and youhave to like mix that in alright becausethat’s some some hungry use that aren’tgetting their actionsthat’s gross is it frothing I don’t knowwhat is this chunky bit off the dayspoon chopped asaurus rex oh we’ve gotfrothing action it’s so now we need toadd everything together flour into thebowl 2 tablespoons of sugar then we havea tablespoon of salt which I just wantto pause and say that’s a lot ofassaults that’s a lot of salt but stickinto the recipe here 2 tablespoons ofGod’s gift to man ok but stuff thencomes the nastiest ingredient on thisplanet Earth aka geez I just want youguys to see how disgusting this stufflooks it’s bacteria eating their way andbuilding a poop trail of air bubblesyeast is nasty yeast is nasty but it’sgoing in the bubble who’s gonna pourthis in oh it’s like the foam crust uptop go in that is some disgustingness ifI’ve ever seen it and I’m just supposedto mix this together this is the spoon Ihave is it the right spoon for thisprobably not but it’s what I have sohere we are this can’t be rightI’ve done something wrong I’ve donesomething wrong I need to comportcan’t even make a day or ingredientbreadstick okay breathe I just looked onthe recipe and I thought it said twotablespoons of water but no it’sactually 1 cup 1/4 a cup and 2tablespoons which seems like ridiculouswhy not just say well actually I guessis there another way to say that I don’tknow so now I’m gonna add a cup and 1/4a cup of water which should definitelymake this a better situation I have myhands in here I’m gonna have to get[Music]Christiana always helps me make bread ohit’s kind of feels goodsuddenly I like my life a little bitmore I think it’s cuz I really likeslime like I could get behind being likea slime lager if that was still a thingcuz I was fine so I got this chunkyslightly sticky thing of dough now we’regonna need this suckerI got remove the bowl out of the way soI don’t hurt myself I’ve got a littlebit of flour here more now on my countertap and now I’m gonna need it looked uphow I need on the internet you push inand pull back you push and a pull back Ithink that’s is good I didn’t evenunderstand that I think business is goodis this gonna get it doesn’t look smoothbut I’m afraid to add any more flour doit so now we put it back in this bowlcover up with a little towel and wait 45minutes okay I was like so proud ofmyself I was like look at me crushinglight and then apparently I was stillfailure so in reviewing there was theinstructions you need to turn this intoa 2 foot log of which then I cut into 16pieces need them a little bit and thenmake them into breadsticks how do youget it to a bowl out it keeps just goingback in that’s about 2that’s about 2 feet of dough okay now wecut it up mean need need they keep goinglike back it’s not look appropriatebaking is not it’s like you need to bethe mature to bake you need to be amature individual I am NOT mature enoughto bake them I’m washing some clothes Ipull this breadstick I get all where itis Abby I’ll put it down we’ll be up abreadstick right watch what is sorcerythere isn’t no way in hell I’m doing a16 times more per se it’s so hard toroll so I’m just gonna make this intoone huge bread stick of my dreams cuzlike who does doesn’t want to join itfriends today I would like to point outI have known for how long I will bakethis for because I don’t know how muchyou make a chalky bread stick for itthis is your girloh I’m crushing it I got some breadsticks on the fan I mean I don’t knowwhat it’s supposed to look like I meanthey’re springing back I’m just gonnamake it I’m just gonna put it in theoven I’m supposed to it in the oven for15 minutes at 400 you got our four breadsticks here we go it’s now in just waitwait Oh get out of iteven terrible co-op so pull this backout oven and I need a little buttermixture it’s just about tablespoon and aquarter of butter and then some salt thenice sprinkled and and then I have thissweet little brush that I bought at thestore go ahead and I’m gonna brush it onthe bread sticks and now now we bakethem again and 15 minutes in anotherlike Brad magic and the breasts my giantlog of bread it’s soaking it upit’s a hungry little seconds I want mybutteryes you do you choked a little beast youchunky little bread take a beast mmthat’s I’m good with this oneI don’t good[Laughter]uh-oh owand a Burma’s up now yes more buttercause it’s delicious got some garlicpowder I don’t know how much I’msupposed to put in but I feel like youcan’t screw this part up this is garlicI’m not making out with anybody nobodycares a highly highly argued ingredientof oregano yeah I’m trash I don’t careto do with my teeth that’s good enoughmix it up mmm deliciousI do like coating anything in butter soI am enjoying that no we’ll save alittle bit of extra for big chunky whois still in the oventhe entire process of making thesebreadsticks took me around three hours amore experienced cook could probablyhave made these in about two hours byavoiding my mishaps with yeast androlling and shaping the dough actually Icheated a little bit and got some helpfrom my sister rolling them out becauseit was just taking so long even with theextra help this was significantly longerthan the 31 minutes the recipe claimedthe breadsticks would take to makeit does not taste anything we can allkind of read static in my opinion isconnoisseur of all GERD breadsticks thisis this is not rose done hmmI’m premature others didn’t rise at allI think did rise they would have beenlike the size of my house because theywere already really big um I think I’mjust eating here because I haven’t eatenlunch and I’m happyso now let me go through all of that howdid my copycat breadsticks stack up tothe original now just as a reminder weraided the entire experience across fivekey things cost difficulty time look andtaste and each of them are going to geta score on one to five stars one beingthe worst five being the best so firstlet’s look at cost overall if you havemost of the ingredients at home becauseyou cook or bake regularly it’s a veryvery low cost endeavor now if you arelike me and don’t bake regularly andhave to go buy stuff it’s gonna be moreexpensive but overall we’re gonna assumethat most people have flour and sugarand salt and all of those things at homeso we’re gonna say it’s about 4 out of 5stars it’s a pretty cost-effectiverecipe now on to difficulty overall therecipe wasn’t that difficult howeverthere were some key details that wereleft out like for example the fact thatyou needed to add sugar to the yeast toget it to froth so overall I’m gonnagive this about 3 out of 5 stars nowit’s a time time was terrible the recipeclaimed it would take 31 minutes to makethe entire recipe no this took us aboutthree hours and I had helpI can’t imagine somebody doing this ontheir own and how long it must havereally taken so one star now he ismaking bread in three hours bad probablynot but if you’re gonna claim that therecipe takes 31 minutes then yeah you’regetting one star for that crap cuz thatnot gonna fly here then we have looklook at three stars it did look like abreadstick it just wasn’t as golden orlike buttery looking as the originalhowever it did look really similar so Ican’t really fault it for much now we’reon to our last variable which is tastenow while the bread stick did taste goodit did not taste anything like an OliveGarden breadstick so we gave it a 2 outof 5 stars it was pretty dense it wascrispy on the outside and definitely hada different flavor than the Olive Gardenbreadstick so overall when you averageall of that out we’re givethe entire recipe a 2.6 out of 5 starsscoreso on the Left we have an Olive Gardenbreadstick hit on the right we have anAnna Garden breadstick now what I’mgonna do is we got an Olive Gardenbreadsticks bag I’m gonna put bothbreadsticks in here and we’re gonna haveher blind taste test them which meansshe’s literally gonna have a fine lineand we’ll figure out which which isbetter so I had this sleepy so we’regonna make rather put on just put thaton our face I want you to reach and graba bread thing and point me out okay takea bite what you think about this breadstick it’s chewy like a bread stickshould be okayreach in grab number two oh there weretwo in here yeah cuz there’s two toffeegirl labor is more powerful and this isa lot lighterthe other one was fake like we did goodlike dead you think a little bit goes Ithink I like the first one better thoughwait reallyyeah I’ma be honest why do you like thefirst one better I think that this oneis too aired like I just like how it howdense that one is so which do you thinkis the rustic I made can I feel them no[Laughter]okaythe first one yeahoh okay wait now you think if I wouldhave seen these I probably would haveknown yeah but see that’s why wetrenching they don’t look that like thislooks like a pretty good breadstick likefood yeah it looks good like it doesn’twhen you are rolling them out I was alittle scared that’s what we have tolike hide you away my breadsticks makingexperience all I got was a breadstickhowever when I go to Olive Garden Icould have a pizza stuffed with pastathat I can then dip my bread stick inwhen it comes to Olive Gardenbreadsticksit’s a bias situation plus they comefree with everything we ordered an extrathing of breadsticks to film with and wefound that every item you order getsbreadsticks like literally every item soI now have about 45 breadsticks in myapartment from all goods so if you wantthe breadsticks come on over I also havethe eight lumpy misshapen ones I made sowe didn’t breadstick heaven right nowit’s the world of bread so I hope youguys enjoyed watching this I had so muchfun making it I think it’s such a funway for me to just do something new andI
