Cooking with kids- Sourdough Pancakes

We use sourdough pancakes so illustrate some tips for getting started cooking with your kids. Never leave kids unattended with kitchen tools or near a hot stove, and have fun!
Here’s the recipe we’re using here so you can try it on your own!

Makes Ten 5″ Pancakes
Equipment:
Medium or Large Mixing Bowl
Whisk or Dinner fork
1/4 cup Measuring Cup
Frying Pan or Griddle
Spatula
Oven Safe Dish
Range

Ingredients:
2 cups sourdough starter
2 eggs
2 tbls Oil
3 tbls sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 tbls water (or milk if you like)
1 tablespoon butter for cooking
1 tablespoon butter for servingMaple Syrup for serving

Preheat your oven to warm, or its lowest setting if you don’t have a warming option.
Mix all ingredients (except butter and maple syrup) together in a medium sized bowl until they are evenly combined. If you have little ones helping you cook, it’s best to use a much bigger bowl than you would normally need, and then you are able to give them the freedom to try out stirring as best they can without a big mess.
Start heating your pan or skillet over medium-low heat with the butter. It is better to go low and slow than fill your house with smokey butter, which is very easy to do!
When the pan is hot enough that the butter begins to sizzle, and a drop of water flicked into the pan sizzles away right away, you’re ready for your pancakes. (The water flicking is a fun job for kids who can be trusted near the stove.)
Pour a scant (not all the way full) 1/4 cup of batter per pancake, remembering to leave enough space in your pan for each one to spread out about 5″. When the edges of the pancake start to look dry-ish, and the top is covered with little holes from popped air bubbles, you’re ready to flip.

Your pancakes don’t need long at all on the second side, less than a minute, then pop them onto an oven safe dish in the warm oven to be sure your pancakes stay warm until all the rest are done cooking.
Serve your pancakes with butter and maple syrup, or a little sliced fruit or cooked berries are always great options to dress up a meal! Either way, enjoy your cakes!
