[Music]oh hello there and happy Easter almosteveryone we’re completing our Lentenjourney here at the Basilica st. Maryand invite you in for the so at thekitchen as we prepare a special recipethat helps us to understand the beautyof what we’re celebrating these days inthe resurrection our recipe is calledresurrection cookies and it comes to usfrom a wonderful Catholic blog calledCatholic cuisine hosted by JessicaGordon it’s a recipe that’s easy to makefood of course always reminds us thatGod became man and first the Passover isa celebration with food the mass is asacrifice but also a meal and reminds usthat God wishes to feed us body and soulthat he cares for us and loves us in ourhumanity with his sacred humanity ourrecipe is a great one to involvechildren in and to help them to learnabout the meaning of what we’recelebrating today based on theingredients first thing we do is beginby preheating our oven to 300 so wedon’t want to wait till we’re in themiddle of the recipe want to do thatright from the very beginning so webegin by taking our pecans and we’regonna put them into a plastic baggiewith a ziplock that’s only meat Pluseither wooden spoon or a rolling pinplace these into our bag one cup of thewhole pecans we’ve got a good seal andthen we’re just going to crush them thisis great at the coronavirus is stressingyou out now of course we could buy themalready broken but then we would missscriptural reference to the fact thatChrist before he died was first beatenby the Roman soldiers history read inSacred Scripture John chapter 19 andthey came to him and said hail King ofthe Jews and they gave him blows now wehave our vinegar so we’re gonna use oneteaspoon of vinegar and you can havesome in another dish for your childrento taste and of course that reminds usof our Lord in the cross was thirsty andsimply wanted some water to drinkinstead he was given vinegar as a soursour vinegar as we read in John alsochapter 19 afterward Jesus knowing thatall things were now accomplished thatthe scripture might be fulfilled he saidI thirst now there was a vessel setthere full of vinegar and they putting asponge full of vinegar on hyssop put itin his mouth Jesus therefore when he hadtaken a vinegar said it is finished andbowing his head he died our nextingredient are the egg white so we’regonna take our eggs and separate themI’ll just do this in another bowl firstto make sure I don’t get any of theyolks once we have our three egg whiteswe’re going to add them to the vinegarthat we already have in our bowlremember that eggs represent life andJesus came to give us life that was thepurpose for the Incarnation as we seespring coming back to life Christ wantsthat life to grow within us the life ofhis own presence so Easter is a time ofrenewal of beginning again of openingour hearts to the grace that Christwants to Quarian we see that symbolizedby the egg as we read in John chapter 10the thief comes only to steal and tokill and to destroy I come that they mayhave life and may have it moreabundantly I am The Good Shepherd theGood Shepherd gives his life for hissheep Christ death brings us life andthat’s why we call Good Friday good notthat it was good for Christ but that itwas good for us and brought us victoryand triumph as Christ conquers his owndeath and all of our sins just get apinch of salt hereand put a little salt in here we’ll alsohave the boys and girls taste the salttoo and it represents the salty tearsthat were shed by Jesus’s followers andthe bitterness of our own sins as weread in Luke chapter 23 and therefollowed him a great multitude of peopleand of women would be wailed andlamented him now so far the ingredientsaren’t very appetizing are they so we’regonna add a little bit of sugar here andagain we need 1 cup of sugar I’m justgonna measure this out a bit over thesink so I don’t spill itand that reminds us of a sweetest partof the story that Jesus loves us as weread in John chapter 3 o taste and seethe Lord is sweet blessed is the manthat hopes in him for God so loved theworld as to give His only begotten Sonthat whoever believes in Him may notperish but might have life everlastingnow we’re going to beat all of ouringredients here together on a highspeed I’m just using a hand mixer for 12to 15 minutesand now that we have formed oh yes verystiff peakswe know our egg white batter iscompleted and we’re ready to spin itonto our cookie sheet we have beautifulwhite color of our egg white batter andthat reminds us of course of purity holyvirtue holy purity and the purity thatwe should have in God’s eyes and thepurity with which we are cleansed inBaptism we become a pure creation of Godas we read in Isaiah and then come andaccuse me says the Lord if your sins beas scarlet this shall be made white assnowif they be red as crimson that should bewhite as well the beauty of God’s mercytransforming us now we’re gonna fold thebroken nuts into our our batter andthat’s going to remind us as we spoonthis onto our cookie sheet that eachmound would represent the rocky tombwhere Jesus his body was laid we read inthe Gospels Saint Matthew chapter 27 andwhen it was evening there came a certainrich man of Arimathea named Joseph whoalso himself was the disciple of Jesushe went to Pilate and asked for the bodyof Jesus then Pilate commanded that thebody should be delivered and Josephtaken the body wrapped it up in a cleanlinen cloth and laid it in his own newtomb which was hewn out of rock and herolled a great stone to the door of themonument and went away[Music]now we’re going to take our just asChrist was laid in the tomb we’re goingto take our our cookies and place themin the oven which has been preheated 300pounds300 rupees we’re gonna close the doorand here’s the surprise we’re going toturn the oven off now of course that isour Lord being laid in the tomb andwe’re gonna have a wonderful surprisetomorrow in order to ensure that no oneopens the door we’re gonna give the ovena special seal as a reminder and perhapseach of the children in the family coulddo this and that course is a reminderfor them as they’re doing it that we arenot to open this oven till tomorrow orif you’re making these Saturday nightuntil Easter morning this one will openthem and we read in Matthew chapter 27again Pilate said to them you have aguard go guard it as you know and theydeparted and made the supplicationsealing the stone and setting the guardsnow once you’re in the oven your cookieseveryone could go to bed if it’s timefor bed and we might feel sad that wehave to leave the cookies overnightinstead of enjoying them immediatelyJesus’s followers of course were indespair as they left our Lord his deadbody in the tomb and walked away as youread in John chapter 16 amen amen I sayto you that you shall lament and weepbut the world shall rejoice and youshall be made sorrowful but your sorrowwill be turned into joy a woman whenshe’s in labor has sorrow because herhour has come but when she is broughtforth her child she remembers no morethe anguish for the joy that a child isborn into the worldso also you now indeed have sorrow but Iwill see you again and your heart shallrejoice and your joy no man shall takefrom you now go to bed and we’ll see youtomorrow morning or a wonderful surpriseand now it’s time for the big reveal ofour resurrection cookiesit’s Easter morning we’ll take the tapeoff of our ovena certain sense our Lord in the tomb ifyou will take our cookies outand they are beautifully done want to becareful not to break them they arefragile and now it’s the moment we’veall been waiting for the time to sampleour delicious resurrection cookies Alexcould you come and be our guest tasterAlex is our director of communicationevangelization here at the Basilica andis working overtime as we celebrate HolyWeek in this very unusual way Alex herejust go ahead and try this one and[Music]tell me how you find them are there goodhoo-wee but also hollow inside and ofcourse that’s the symbol of theresurrection that Christ is no longer inthe tombso the cracked appearance of the cookiesthat crisp crunch reminds us of the tomband then the emptiness inside becauseher lord has risen and there’s a wholenewness and creation that comes fromChrist risen that we participate inthrough our baptismal promises which werenew every Easter the great joy as wesee nature coming back to life God wantsto come back to life within us as weopen our hearts to him may these cookiesand this recipe be wonderful way toshare the joy and meaning of Good FridayHoly Saturday issues Sunday or yourfamily from our family to yours a veryhappy Easter and a blessed holy Easterseason[Music]
