Making Bread from Aspen Bark (3 uses of Aspen trees)

Aspen trees have been traditionally used by native populations for medicinal purposes, mainly for treating cystitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even the common cold. Aspen properties include anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic actions. The most vital compound in aspen is Salicin which inhibits molecules produced by the body in response to tissue damage and infection. Salicin is also the active ingredient in Aspirin. The benefits don’t stop there. Because of the Salicin, this gives you a soothing conditioning property. Helping the Skin stay smooth and soft.

There are a verity of uses to the aspen tree today we will cover 3: Extraction, Ointment, and… Bread?!

Salve:
1.) Infuse oil of your choice with aspen bark for about 2 weeks
2.) Strain oil from the bark
3.) Heat the 1 cup of oil and add about 1tbs of bee’s wax
4.) Pour in containers and let cool.

Extraction:
1.) Fill a glass jar half full with dried aspen bark
2.) Fill jar with alcohol
3.) Place jar in a safe place for about 6 weeks.
4.) Pour the strained liquid into a dropper.
We use a full dropper on as need basis for headaches.

Bread:
1.) Make Flour out of aspen bark
2.) Mix half cup of aspen flour in 2.5 cups of regular flour
3.) Combine flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl. Stir in water.
4.) Cover and let stand at room temp. for 3 hours.
5.) After 3 hours transfer it to a well-floured surface. Using a scraper fold dough over & shape into a rough ball.
6.) Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet Let stand on counter top for about 35 minutes.
7.) Meantime Preheat oven to 450° F and place a dutch oven into the heating oven
8.) Transfer dough with parchment into the hot dutch oven. Bake for 30 minutes.
9.) After 30 minutes remove the brea with parchment and place directly on the oven for about 5-10 minutes.
