How to make Guinness Bread

Preparation Time: 15 mins
Cooking Time: 40-50 mins
Serves: 2-4 (1 Loaf)


1lb Coarse Wholemeal Flour (450g)
1oz of Porridge Oats (25g)
2 level teaspoons of Bread Soda (8g)
4 tablespoons of Demerara/Brown Sugar (60g)
2oz Butter or Margarine (50g)
1 tablespoon Treacle (15g)
13.5 fl oz of Guinness Stout Ale (400ml)


1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas 5.

Wet Mix:
2. Melt butter and treacle together in a saucepan over a low heat.
3. When the butter has melted, add the Guinness Ale and stir well

Dry Mix:
4. Mix the wholemeal flour, porridge oats, brown sugar and bread together in a large bowl.
5. Sieve in the baking soda and mix well.

6. Now add the wet mix to the dry mix and fold them together until completely combined.
7. Lightly grease a 2lb loaf tin.
8. Spoon the mixture into the greased tin.
9. Bake for about 40-50 minutes until risen.
10. If you carefully turn the loaf and tap it underneath it should sound hollow.
11. Wrap in a clean tea towel and allow to cool otherwise it will crumble apart when you try to slice it.
