Great British Bake Off 2019: Michael Chakraverty dealt cruel blow after Bread Week victory

Great British Bake Off is now in it’s 10th year and all eyes are on who will be victorious. The contestants are merely three weeks in to their competition, and with week four looming this evening, the statistics are slowly but surely racking up.  Great British Bake Off is now in it’s 10th year and all eyes are on who will be victorious
The contestants are merely three weeks in to their competition, and with week four looming this evening, the statistics are slowly but surely racking up
Taking a look at the history of GBBO, it seems tonight’s instalment could be the game-changer which reveals who will take the decorative cake plate home with them
It was long thought that whoever performed well in Bread Week would eventually go on to be the winner oft the Great British Bake Off as a whole
Throughout the previous nine seasons, fans might be surprised to discover there’s only been two Star Bakers from the dreaded week
Contestants are definitely up against it when they tackle the doughy challenge, considering it is Paul Hollywood’s speciality – and his eagle eye knows no limits
However, only season three’s John Whaite and season nine’s Rahul Mandal have ever taken Star Baker in the tough week
Even Paul himself makes a big deal about Bread Week, pretty much insisting anyone who triumphs then will be crowned the winner
But with only 22 per cent of victors also getting Star Baker on the doughy week, where has all the pressure come from? Looking back over the past nine seasons, it seems the winners don’t necessarily have to be crowned as Star Baker on Bread Week to have done well

Of the nine winners, 77 per cent of them came in the top five places during the technicals for Bread Week in particular
That makes up a whopping seven of the nine contestants.  What’s more, four of the nine came in the top three
It’s certainly impressive standards when looking at the current 2019 contestant line-up, there’s certainly a couple of names that stand out above the rest
Michael Chakraverty may have only come sixth in the technical, but he was awarded the Star Baker title
Henry Bird, David Atherton, Steph Blackwell, Priya O’Shea and Michelle Evans-Fecci came in the top five for the technical title
With those six names in the foray already, what else will they need to do to stand out from the crowd?   Tonight’s episode is without a doubt a new venture for the Great British Bake Off
Dairy Week has never been done before, and it’s still up in the air about what delicious recipes it will actually contain, considering most bakes have an element of dairy in them
Typically, whenever there’s a brand new week on GBBO, the winners will perform quite well
There’s been weird and wonderful themes throughout the past nine years, including Sweet Dough Week, Unconventional Ingredients Week, European Cakes Week and Vegan Week
Perhaps most surprisingly, every time a new genre is revealed, the winner of that season will score in the top five for technicals
Take last year’s winner, Rahul, for example. He came third in Spice Week, fifth in Danish Week and an impressive first in Vegan Week’s technical challenges
His record is only bettered by Nadiya Hussain, Great British Bake Off season six champion, who came first in both Alternative Ingredients and Victorian Weeks, and fourth in Chocolate Week
It goes without saying, whoever will win tonight is certainly looking good for the final
But who will it be? Between Michael, Henry, David, Steph, Priya and Michelle, there’s one name who almost definitely stands out above the crowd
Aside from Bread Week, 2019 viewers have also enjoyed Cake and Biscuits Week. There, Michelle and Alice Fevronia triumphed respectively
In the cake edition, the results of the top five technical bake orderings were as follows, starting at first place: Henry, Rosie Brandreth-Poynter, Steph, Amelia Le Bruin and Alice
In the biscuit week, the same standings were: Alice, David, Phil Thorne, Michael and Rosie

Coincidentally, all three of them have been awarded as Star Baker, for each of the three weeks of the Great British Bake Off
Four of the previous nine winners triumphed in the first two weeks, and in fact, of the first three weeks
Therefore, Michelle, Michael and Alice could all say they’re in with a good chance of at least appearing in the final
Of course, there’s a long way to go yet on the competition. Look at previous winners such as Joanne Wheatley, who didn’t get Star Baker until week six and Frances Quinn who eventually got the title in week seven
Nadiya Hussain and Sophie Faldo both didn’t get there until week five. With it all up in the air, it seems Michael, Alice and Michelle still have a lot of work to do before they can lift the cake plate
