What is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent in the Catholic tradition, and Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday in the UK. The word ‘Shrove’ is derived from the Old English word ‘shrive’ meaning ‘to confess all sins’.
It is called Pancake Day because it is a traditional way of eating pancakes, as it is a way to consume any stocks of milk, butter and eggs that were forbidden during Lent.
