How To Make A DIY Sugar Cookie Kit – A Demonstration By Kookie

I’ve been baking up a lot of cookie kits lately, and I’ve been getting a lot of questions from other cookie decorators and hobby bakers about how I put together my kits. This video is an in-depth look at what materials and supplies I use to put together my kits. They’re great fun for kids, families, and even adults, especially with a lot of people being at home a bit more than usual right now.

Most of these things can be bought from places like ULine or Amazon, but I encourage you to also check out your local packaging and baking supply stores, as well. Support local, support the little guys – they can always use your business, especially now during these trying times. (I’m writing this in May 2020).

Some of my local favourites (in the Southwestern Ontario, Canada area) for a lot of these supplies including bags, boxes, and sprinkles, are Flour Confections (https://www.flourconfections.com/), McCalls Chocolate & Baking Supplies (http://mccalls.ca/), Creative Bag (https://www.creativebag.com/), Vanilla Food Company (https://www.vanillafoodcompany.ca/), and How Sweet Is That? (https://howsweetisthat.ca/). They’re all wonderful companies.

Unpack all materials from your kit.

Assemble sugar cookies onto plate or cookie sheet.

Gently knead each icing bag for 1-2 minutes. Separation is normal.

Cut a small hole in each piping bag by snipping the pointy end with a pair of sharp scissors.

hey guys cookie here and today I’m goingto show you how to assemble a DIY cookiekit now there isn’t a whole lot ofinformation out there about making themand I figured you know what I’ve madethem enough to show others how to makethem and I’m always getting messagesfrom people asking specific questionsabout them so I wanted to go in-depthbecause that’s what I like to do I likedetails so let’s get into itfirst things first the boxI love these boxes they’re cheap they’replain and it doesn’t take much to gussythem up these are actually pie boxes andthere are nine by nine by 2.5 incheswhich is the absolute perfect size foryour average sized cookie hit they havea window in the top two so they showcaseyour kit beautifully if these aren’t bigenough for what you need look up cake orbakery boxes and find something in yoursize these boxes sometimes come indifferent colors and can come with orwithout windows on the top I like toline my box with a little bit of fluffit keeps the content safe it adds a popof color to an otherwise kind of drablooking box and presentation is alwaysimportant this stuff is called sizzleand it’s made of paper it comes in allsorts of different colorstissue paper would also look really niceit’s always important to give yourcookie decorator a little bit ofdirection you don’t need to go into acrazy amount of detail but I’ll givesome sample directions below in thedescription add your logo or somethingpretty give it your own little spinprint them and cut them out I cut mineso they are about a quarter of a pagenow these things aren’t absolutelynecessary but I found that customersreally appreciate them you could alwaysadd them as sort of an option to kind oflike when you go through drive-throughand they ask you if you want any ketchupor utensils some might say yes somemight say no these polypropylene baggieshave little white dots and are supercute for packaging pair them with sometwist ties and your customer has theirown packaging so that they can sharetheir cookie creations with friends andfamily people love packaging their owncookies it makes the cookies feel a lotmore specialI’ve added some more than utensils aswell you can use coffee stir stickspopsicle sticks craft sticks tonguedepressors they’re all wooden sticksjust different sizes I also found theseadorable little spoons for the sprinkleswhich I mean are totally unnecessary butjust look at them here is so cute nowfor the sugar cookies themselves andI’ve seen a lot of people who willindividually package the cookies whichdoesn’t make a whole lot of sense sincemost people are just going to rip openthe packages of cookies and decoratethem all in one afternoon which defeatsthe purpose of individually packagingthem if you do individually package thecookies don’t heat seal them just putthem all in individual baggies and add atwist tie that way the decorator canremove the cookie decorate it and thenpackage them when they’re dry you canjust skip adding baggies and twist tiesbut honestly I just like to stack thecookies and heat seal on one bag it’s alot less work and you can leave theindividual packaging thing as an optioni package 2 8 cookies which is a goodaverage number 6 seems to be too littleand 12 seems to be too many I’vedetermined 8 to be my magic number soI’m kind of sticking with it I’m usingthat to pound polypropylene bag which is4 by 2 by 10 inches and then I used myheat sealer at the number 5 setting toseal itfor the icing I’m using royal icing somecookie decorators use buttercream butthis is all personal preference royalicing is what I personally use todecorate my own sugar cookies so I wantthe customer to decorate with the sameicing that I use I know that a lot ofpeople aren’t really keen on the flavoroverall icing either so that’s why it’simportant to have a good tasting productI mean it’s always important but it’sespecially important in this case I’mconfident in the flavor of my cookiesand in my royal icing I found over theyears while decorating cookies thatthere is definitely a loomingmisconception that sugar cookies tastebad and some do unfortunately but provepeople wrong splurge on some goodflavorings and spend the time onperfecting your recipe so that it tastesgood be that exception and surprisepeopleyou definitely want to use a mediumconsistency icing or what a lot ofpeople call a 20-second icing meaningthat if you draw a line in the icingwith your spoon it should disappearafter about 20 seconds because thedecorator is going to be using it fromeverything to flooding to Oh lining anddetailing so it needs to be thin enoughto spread out a little bit but not thinenough that it’s going to run off thecookie it still needs to hold its shapethis can be kind of a tricky consistencyto get but with a little bit of practiceit becomes a lot easier with time add alittle bit of water at a time to get itto this consistency my favoritedisposable piping bags to use are bytruly mad plastics they come in smallmedium and large I’m using medium if youdo end up going with buttercream thoughyou’ll definitely need to go with a moredurable piping bag as these ones mightbe a little bit too thin buttercream isthick in my kits I offer three differentcolors of icing and I fill these pipingbags between 70 and 80 grams full whichis around 2.5 ounces squeeze the icingto the tip and tie a knot in the top ofthe bag but leave a little bit of roomat the top there’s a really importantreason for this your icing will separateafter sitting that’s just gonna happenand the decorator will need to be ableto remix the icing by kneading the icingbag in their hand for about one to twominutes if you tie the knot right abovethe icing making the bag too tight youcan’t knead the icing bag very easilywithout risking popping a hole in thebag from so much pressure leaving alittle room at the top gives the icingsome space to moveit doesn’t look as pretty when the icingbag isn’t as tight but we’ll fix thatlater I could probably do a whole videoon sprinkles there are so many optionsand most cookie decorators are sprinklehoarders so this will be a good chanceto use up some of your collection I dothree different sprinkles about onetablespoon of each I use these littletwo ounce portion containers which aresuper handy because a lot of the timethe decorator might have some left atthe end so this way they can just putthe lid back on and save them for futurebaking projects you could also use smallrecei little bags choose colors that gowith your theme but when in doubtrainbow is always a favorite you can buysprinkle mixes or you can just make yourown which is a lot less expensive someof the designer sprinkles can be prettypricey for the quantity that you get butif you have a lot of different types andcolors you can just make your own mixesand I know I’m probably going toslaughter some of these words but youcan use Tracy’s non perils which arethose super tiny round sprinkles sandingsugar rock sugar sugar pearls sixletswhich are like sugar pearls but withchocolate in the middle jimmies whichare long sprinkles and then you canthink outside the sprinkle realm and useother candies and toppings likechocolate chips marshmallows small chewycandies colored coconut the list goes onone of my favorite non sprinkles arethese little Callebaut crisps pearlswhich are chocolate on the outside andcrispy cereal on the insidefor the packaging I have counted outeight bags as well as eight twist tiesagain this is optional but I find that alot of customers really like to packageand share their cookies then I’vecounted out six wooden sticks to use forthe icing as two kids seems to be theaverage for my kids and I want to givethem a stick for each color of icing aswell as a wooden spoon to share for thesprinkles if you wanted you could alsoinclude things like toothpicks as wellI’m taking all of these loose things andtucking them into the top bag so they’renot moving around the box if you’re notincluding any packaging you could alwaysjust tie the utensils together with somepretty butchers twine or a twist tie orjust dome it them if that’s what youchoose to do to further personalize thepackaging I’m adding a sticker to thebox it’s my logo on it if you buy thesein bulk they’re fairly inexpensive andthey’re a simple way to make herpackaging look great and professionalyou could even make your own or printsome logos onto paper and stick them onwith tape or you could simply use yourbusiness card in place of a sticker sothat the customer can keep it that workstoo I’m using these cute stickers tofasten the Box closed when I’m finishedpackaging that way they’re not going toflop open when the customer picks themup it’s also that little sense ofsecurity – there’s always something alittle more exciting about opening asealed box you could use plain tape oryou could also use some decorative washitapenow comes the fun part assembling theboxit’s like cookie hit Tetris tuck in yourcookies add your bags and utensils tothe back along with your instructionsadd your sprinkles to the top and backto what I said before about the icingbags how we were going to fix them upand make them look a little bit morepretty all you have to do is twist themso that the icing bag becomes tight andthen tuck the top underneath see hownice that looksassemble the icing bags top to bottombeside the cookies and there we goclose the box add your sticker fastenthe box closed and you’ve got yourfinished kit when you compare cookiekits to actual cookie decorating itprobably doesn’t feel as creative butyou can totally get creative with ideaswhen it comes to themes and sprinklemixes for example this was a made gardenthemed kit and I included a watering cantulip and potted plant cookie as well assome sprinkles and spring green and softpastel colors and yeah there’s somesprinkles in there that happen to berainbow because kids love rainbow I’llbe sure to share some more ideas in thedescription below and if you have anymore themed ideas with some interestingcookie shapes and sprinkle mixes sharethem in the comments thanks for watchingguys be sure to like me on Facebook andan
