Simplified Homemade Roti Canai|Parathas|Indian Flat Bread – Melissa’s Home Cooking
This recipe makes up to 18 pieces

This is a simplified version of making your own homemade Roti Canai!
Crispy, flaky, and soft all at once, Roti Canai is essential with any curry.
Roti Canai, or Parathas, or Indian Flat Bread is an Indian-influenced flatbread dish found in several countries in Southeast Asia. It is usually served with dal or other types of curry, but can also be cooked in a range of sweet or savoury variations made with a variety of ingredients such as meat, egg, or cheese.
Roti Canai is a popular breakfast dish and snack in Malaysia, and one of the most famous examples of Malaysian Indian cuisine.

Ingredients:

For Roti Canai/Parathas/Flat Bread
(This recipe will make 18 Roti Canai/Parathas/Flat Bread)

4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp salt
2 egg
1 – 1 ½ cups water (at room temperature)
Melted Butter or ghee as needed
Extra all-purpose flour for sprinkling

To serve
Steamed basmati rice
Your favourite curry
Or as a snack, dip in sugar

Instruction:
For Roti Canai/Parathas/Flat Bread

1. In a mixing bowl, mix all-purpose flour and salt.

2. Add egg and water slowly to make a dough.

3. Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

4. Divide the dough into 18 equal parts. Then shape each piece of dough into a ball.

5. Cover the balls of dough with plastic wrap and let them rest in the fridge for 15 minutes before rolling.

6. Roll these balls of dough to about 6-7 inches in diameter. Apply a layer of butter or ghee on top. Then sprinkle some all-purpose flour.

7. With a pizza cutter, cut the dough into quarters, and then roll the dough into a cone shape as shown in the video.

8. Open up the top layer of the dough into the shape of a flower and flip it down on the surface into a flat ball.

9. Cover the balls of dough with plastic wrap and let them rest again in the fridge for 15 minutes before rolling.

10. Roll out the dough into 6-7 inches in diameter.

11. Heat up the pan on medium heat, then cook the Roti Canai, applying butter or ghee on both sides as shown in the video, keep the heat medium.

12. Wrap in foil to keep warm.

13. The Roti Canai are ready with crispy layers outside and soft layers inside.
Serve hot with curry or eat it by itself by dipping it in some sugar for a snack.
