Hempfield Church of the Brethren Making Bread for Communion

During this Holy week where many remain in our own homes, our sister, Penny, walks through the process of making communion bread. She explains how and why it is made and invites us to make it from our homes and with our families as we are able.
Family Communion Bread

2-3 cups flour
½ tsp salt
2/3 c. butter
¾ – 1 cup milk

NOTE: A gluten-free flour and a dairy-free product can be substituted

Mix flour, salt, and butter as you would pie crust. Add wet ingredient and mix well. Form this into a ball and knead for 10 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic. More flour may need to be used. Roll out to ¼” thick and cut into shapes of your choice. (Use a glass, small cookie cutter or cut into squares). Prick each piece with a 3-prong fork, than go in one hole twice to make 5 pricks. (This reminds us that Jesus body was pierced five times before he was crucified. (Lashing, thorns, hands, feet, and side.) After this is done, place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees until edges are brown. (Depending on size of each piece of dough the baking time may vary). Bake about 10 minutes, then watch closely so not to burn.

1 Corinthians 11:23-25
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
