How to Cook Shephard’s pie at home!

How to easily make the original shephard’s pie at home with lamb!

Veggie Mix

1 Large Onion Diced
3 Cloves of Garlic Chopped
1 Large Can (540 ml/2 Cups) Whole Kernel Corn
Canned (540 ml) or Frozen Peas and Carrots (2 Cups)
OPTIONAL Green Chilies
5 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
1/2 cup Chicken Broth
2 Tbsp Butter
1 – 1 1/2 tsp Paprika
1 tsp Black Pepper

Meat
2 lbs Ground Lamb (or Chicken or Turkey)
2 TBSP Soy Sauce
5 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 tsp Ginger Powder

Mashed Potatoes
6-7 Medium Potatoes
3/4 Cup Grated Mild Cheese (of choice)
1/4 Cup Milk
1 Tbsp butter
Salt and Pepper to taste (for Potatoes only)

Optional garnish Pre Baking

Steps

Step 1

In a large pot or pressure cooker place potatoes to boil

Step 2

Heat 1 Tbsp of butter in a pan. Add onions and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Then add garlic and continue to cook until onions are a translucent colour, about 4 minutes

Step 3

Add corn, peas, carrots, chilies, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, black pepper, paprika, butter and chicken stock and cook for 5-7 minutes on a medium heat stirring occasionally

Step 4

Add ground meat to a pot on medium heat and start to break the meat into small pieces with a ladle. Add ginger powder, 1 Tbsp butter, Worcestershire and soy sauce and continue to cook for 8-10 minutes or until meat is fully cooked

Step 5

Combine meat and veggie mix

Step 6

In a large bowl combine all ingredients for mashed potatoes and mash until a smooth consistency is reached. Avoid using a hand blender as it will change the texture of the potatoes

Step 7

Spread meat mix and mashed potatoes to baking dish. Even out potatoes using the sharp end of a fork. Poke some holes across the top to avoid any air bubbles when baking

Step 8 OPTIONAL

Top with some grated cheese to create a nice crisp top layer

Step 9

Bake at 350°F and bake for 15 -18 minutes. OPTIONAL – You may broil on high for 3 minutes to create a nice brown top layer and remove from oven. Cut into slices as desired

Serve with a side of gravy and ENJOY!!!!

So for those of you who know me you know I have many passions….travel, shoes, sports, food etc. So after being too scared to try or making excuses or having 270000000 ideas before I decided what to do…I just went ahead and FINALLY did it!
I Love food. Cooking is my happy place, my meditation, my teacher and my soul.

My motto is – I LIVE TO EAT!

If you know me then you know that I would rather skip a meal than eat a tasteless dish. I grew up with flavours. So much so that I literally perspire spices (no literally my mom Prem Puri always decides to cook 4 minutes before I’m about to leave the house and I smell like a walking garlic and onion sauté). I am a walking delicious meal on most days! 😉

I come from a background of (self made) chefs/cooks and I grew up with my parents having a restaurant. I have been blessed with the exposure to so many different ethnic cuisines through my travels, cousin in-laws, friends and of course the city I was born in – Toronto, Canada.

I want to share this with everyone while I continue on my own journey to keep learning about the art of food.

I’m no master chef, not even close. I’m just your everyday girl who wants to cook 5 meals in a day sometimes just for fun. And I drop things…and burn things (mostly myself)…and break things and sometimes (just sometimes) make things that are just….unpalatable (facts)!

So if you like to cook, nothing #gordonramsay style, but just good ol’ delicious, healthy, hearty and food made with LOVE (secret ingredient revealed) then follow me on instagram @rkwhatscooking and on FB page Rita’s Kitchen – What’s Cooking.

I love feedback because life is still always about growth and learning and BETTER FOOD!!!

Hope to see you all soon!
