TRADITIONAL APPLE PIE RECIPE
Ingredients:
Granny Smith, or any tart apple 6-8 apples, about 2 pounds (approx. 907 g) peeled, cored, and sliced thin
Lemon zest 1 ¾ teaspoon
Granulated sugar 2/3 cup (approx. 133 g)
Ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon
Kosher salt ¼ teaspoon
Cornstarch 4 tablespoons
Butter, unsalted 1 tablespoon
1) Preheat oven to 350 (177 Celsius). Take out prepared crumb topping from refrigerator and set aside.
2) In a large mixing bowl, combine apples, lemon zest, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch and salt. Let them sit for a few minutes to allow juices to start forming.
3) Spoon apples into prepared pie crust shell – try to pile evenly and high. Add small pieces of butter to four “corners” of the pie.
4) Take crumb topping and start breaking into small chunks and evenly spread out on top of the apples.
5) Place pie on a sheet pan and bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour or until crumb is browned. Apple pies have a tendency to bubble over and leak while all of the natural and added sugars are caramelizing!
6) Once cooled, top with powdered sugar (if desired) and serve!
