Making German Apple Pancakes

After picking apples at a local orchard with the film crew of The German-American Friendship Year in tow, I whipped up one of my favorite autumn recipes: Apfelpfannkuchen, or German apple pancakes. Find the recipe on my blog: https://spoonfulsofgermany.com/2013/09/27/to-each-his-own-pancake/

hi I’m Nadia Hasani and we are in mykitchen in Northeast Pennsylvania I’mGerman American I’ve been in America for20 years and for the last 15 years I’veliterally cooked my way up and downGermany initially with the read Germanin your cook book I wrote spoonfuls ofGermany which then resulted in a blogthat have written about German food andbeyond since 2013 today I’m going tomake German apple pancakes Germanpancakes are not that different in termsof basic ingredients from Americanpancakes the first ingredient isall-purpose flour about scan cup and twoeggs one ingredient that you don’t findin American pancakes is sparking orseltzer water 3/4 cups the same amountas milk and we want to mix that so it’snice and smooth you can’t do this withan electric mixer but it’s so easy andquick there’s no need to get an electricappliance and you’ll make sure thatthat’s really lump free and nice andsmooth with a pinch of salt and ateaspoon vanilla extract Germany youusually use vanilla sugar when you wantto put the new line to something so thisis my little German American adaption ofmaking pancakes you might notice thatunlike American pancakes there’s nobaking powder baking soda involvedbecause German pancakes are much flatterthey don’t rise as much as as Americanpancakes I will heal core and slice theapples the best apples for Apple pancakes are ones that really hold theirshape so any apple that a baking appleworks well Noori depending on thisI use two to three for one batch ofPancakes huh recorder them and then Iremove the core I cut them in slicesabout an eighth of an inch to a quarterof an inch better a little bit thickerthan thinner to fry the apples I takefor the first batch I take about atablespoon off of butter and melt it inthe pan okay so now I want to put myapple slices in the pan in a singlelayer they can be snuggly but theyshould definitely not be more than in asingle layer because otherwise they willnot cook and brown Jew is reallyeverything in America is bigger than inGermany and larger if you think aboutthe country and the cars and everythingbut pancakes I think either oneexception where the German Germanspecimen is just bigger so as soon as Istart to soften I want to sprinkle themvery lightly with a little cinnamonsugar just a little bit so theycaramelize so I know the apples are youcan see they’re already taking color soI want to turn them over and especiallyif they’re very fresh they almost likepuff up a little bit which is nice whenit’s good one more try to make sure it’sevenly mixed for this very large pan Igo with almost half a cup of batter andthen I have to work very quickly becauseI want to put my apple slices in okayand so I want the pretty sight to thetop so I’m going to flip it over andthen I want to sprinkle it with sugar sothis is the very large pancake I justmade from my blog spoonfuls of Germany Ihope you enjoyed this and maybe you’lltry it sometime
