How to Bake Blackberry Pie in Nature – Feast in the Wild

Blackberry Pie! Here is a great technique on how to bake in wilderness when using a canister stove. I got the idea to bake like this from the YouTube channel Bushcraft Baking. I haven’t seen anybody bake a pie on a stove before.

While I am in North of France I am cooking in the garden and not in nature. As I understand it is is not allowed to have fire in nature here. This recipe can be made wilderness for sure!

This took about 35 minutes to make.
Ingredients
Pie Dough
Black berries (or other types of berries) – Freshly picked preferrably
Sugar
Corn Starch (or Potato Starch)
Lemon Juice (or Apple Cider Vinegar) – Optional, not shown in the video

1) Heat up berries with a little bit of sugar.
2) Add a splash of Lemon Juice or Apple Cidar Vinegar (Optional, you don’t really need that)
3) Taste your filling. Not sweet enough? Add sugar.
4) Cut Pie Dough into circles. The bottom circle should be a bit bigger than the bottom of your pie mold. So it can go up to the sides. Put the bottom layer of pie doug into the pie mold. Keep the paper on and let it be face down.
5) Add your filling
6) Close it up with the second ring of pie dough. Seal the gaps with your fingers or a fork This ring should be about the size of your pie mold. (Optional, I would recommend not putting a lid to your pie. It is pretty hard to get it well cooked at the bottom and the top at the same time)
7) Put ramekin or something else that is heatproof at the bottom of your pot. Put the pie in. Close the top. If you have a thermometer it is good to keep the pie at around 200°C (390°F)
8) If it is burned on the bottom you can often scrape it off as you would do with a toast
9) Enjoy this delicous pie. Hopefully in Nature!

Notes on making an oven on a canister stove.
1) Make sure you use a stove that doesn’t go right on top of the canister. You don’t want the canister to heat up and explode.
2) You can use windshield to keep more of the warm air enclosed
3) You need something to lift up the pie mold. Ceramic ramekin from a local thrift store works great! I guess a stainless steel travel mug could work.
