[Music]hello and welcome to the first editionof hobby farms kitchen I’m Rachel brugerassociate web editor of hobby farms calmhere in the kitchen of Stephanie Steenhobby farm home managing editor Iactually got this recipe from one of mymom’s friends it’s super easy and quickwhich is of course great for me it takessome granny smith apples some sugarscinnamon very easy ingredients quick tocombine um what we have is an unbakedpie crust 7 medium granny smith applespeeled and sliced preferably now is itimportant that their granny smith applesactually um it isn’t but I do prefer touse them because the tartness of theapple actually tends to temper thesugars because there’s a lot of sweet inthis pie so they cook up real nice andthey help sort of balance it out ok andthe rest of our ingredients so we have1/2 a cup of sugar 1/4 teaspoon ofnutmeg quarter teaspoon of salt and 1teaspoon of cinnamon all right what’sour first step well first we need topreheat the oven to 400 degreesFahrenheit ok so let’s turn that on oncewe’ve got that we just mix our dryingredients together okay so if you wereto go ahead and start doing that I willactually peel an apple for us just toshow that they need to be sliced reallythin the reason for this is so that youringredients can really soak into it andyour apples get really thoroughly cookedthrough so you have nice soft apples asyou mix your ingredients you’re justgoing to use a whisk to get a nicethorough mixing is there a particularway I should be mixing it or just goahead and no just um however worksyou’re just trying to get it nice andcombined so that when you throw it overthe apples to coat the apples youringredients are already together and theonly thing you have to worry about atthat point is getting the Apple nice andcoated so it can soak inbut just so you can show how thin toslice them and do not use my cutting asa good example not the safest personwielding a knife but just go for a nicethin slices don’t have to be real evenabout it just want it to be you know notlike that all our dry ingredients areall mixed ok so just sprinkle those ontop of your apples and it helps justspread it out so that it’s a littleeasier as you try to turn it and mix itin good mix it in then mhmyep just get them thoroughly coated makesure all the apples have that littlenice sprinkling on them and once thoseare nice and coated we can dump theminto the pie crust this pie crust isactually from a recipe that we haveonline whose you can find that by Suziquick and its online at hobby farms commslash pie crust and it makes anexcellent flaky crust for a single deepdish pie and I believe this pie crustwas featured in the home for NovemberDecember 2009 thumbs right umperfect pie crust pretty easy to makesimple recipe okay just dump those inand as you’re doing that I’m gonna get aset for the topping and it’s okay foryour apples to sit while you’re workingon your topping because they’ll just beabsorbing all the sugars okay gettingnice and sweetened up ready to go so ifyou want to throw all the dryingredients together and mix those upreal quick we’ve got 3/4 cup all-purposeflour 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoonnutmeg and 1/3 cup butterjust get that in there and then you’lltake the cutter and just sort of work itin okay and this will take a littlewhile and you essentially want to get itso that you have everything in sort of asoft crumb if you want I can take overbut just work it through definitelygives your arms a workout so you want toget your mixture to a nice crumblytexture where it sort of sticks togetherthe butter is what causes that nicecrumbly stuck together texture onceyou’ve got that if you don’t mind tograb the pie we’re just going to dumpthis on top I usually kind of put it inthe middle and then just work my way outthere’s no real rhyme or reason to itother than just doing it take yourtopping and spread it out well thislooks amazinglet me tell you how long do we cook itfor you’ll cook it at 400 degrees for 35minutes or so but basically you’re justlooking for the top to be nice andgolden as well as your pie crust andyou’ll get this you know nice texturedlook to it so let’s pop that in the ovenso after 35 minutes we’re gonna pull thepie out all right oh it smells deliciousshould be nice and golden on top yeah ofcourse you have to have a piece to tryyeah yeah I don’t want to leave out itanyway but and I don’t know if you cansee on camera or not but the juices fromthe apples are really just pooling inthe bottom of it so um you know if youhave time maybe get a spoon and skipthat over the top of it and give it anice little blaze effect all righthere’s a fork for you thank you let’sgive it a tastehmm very nice works for menational pie day is celebrated onJanuary 23rd and you can find thisrecipe online at hobby farms calm flashpie crust or you can upload yourfavorite recipe at hobby farms commslash forums thanks for joining us todayand happy cooking thank you bye bye[Music]
