Beauventures 03: How to Bake a Saskatoon Berry Pie

On this adventure Jesse and I attempt to bake a Saskatoon Berry Pie. We also made some banana bread that we did not show, which was Amazingly good. The recipe is below.

We (aka Jesse) made another Pie after this with the berries we picked, and it turned out much better. There will be a short follow up video on how that turned out.

[Music]
Hey good evening we are baking very late
the only time that us parents can
actually get around to this stuff what
are we going to be making today ask it
to baby pack yeah from our berries let
me pick the Lovaza there to preheat the
oven to 425 here we have all our
supplies needed to make our Saskatoon
berry pie and let’s start with the first
step in a large saucepan bring water and
berries to the boil so we need four cups
of Saskatoon berries and a quarter cup
of water
a quarter cup of water
[Music]
now that we have all those inside of the
and we are going to let it simmer for
about 10 minutes until the berries
release all their juices we will remove
from the heat we’re we’re using our new
Minnie and Mickey bowls let me just got
recently at the Disney Store exciting
next we need in a small bowl to mix our
cornstarch and cinnamon sugar cinnamon
with sugar so we need three tablespoons
of cornstarch 3/4 cups 3/4 cup of sugar
which we already have set out there and
a bonus features awesome
you said sugar right yes sugar we got
that one said Oh
[Laughter]
[Music]
simmering simmering we also have
pre-made some pie pastry for the trust
sprinkle sprinkle sprinkle sprinkle
sprinkle so we’re gonna roll this out
and get it ready for the backrest look
at this tiny spatula the berries have
simmered and the juices of came out of
the berries now it’s time to take it off
the heat which we have done and add
these other ingredients here’s our
progress on the dough as you can tell we
are very very very immature home chefs
no disrespect me – no no come here put
your head down a little bit a little bit
down look at me look at that that’s hard
work
[Music]
it’s almost like I’m going for like
maybe a map sheep will get there an
artistic eventually this he’s gonna go
into here it will be a very fabulous you
will update you on that next we are
putting in two tablespoons of lemon
juice
the real lemon juice lemon juice almond
extract
duh pure extract that’s right I got the
good stuff don’t like it off of your
hands of some sort your ton mistake
number one you need the almond extract
challenge it’s gonna be a thing stir
that up and next is
stir in the sugar and cornstarch mixture
are you having this us and I’m making a
mini one oh boy that was it and actually
smells really great it smells sort of
like my daughter would love that
favorite color pink and purple this
might be her favorite pie now just due
to the color yeah we shall see and after
we get this all mixed up we have to pour
it into the pastry lined pie a plate and
then dot the top with butter when do we
use the evaporated milk again later on
my young padawan update look how good
Jessie’s doing laughing Kevin’s
attaching bad timing for me to say that
and I didn’t get I think we got a be a
pile and in there do some hand modeling
[Music]
I mean we can get the pie filling in
there sooner than puppet in the other
[Music]
[Music]
that’s right that’s kind of Patrick
music and here we go pouring pie filling
into pastry it actually looks really
good smells great you don’t want they’ll
I smell so bad
I think it’s good I guess I rises the
door and we’re gonna find out soon
enough guys hmm
sort of goopy can I feel bad for not
helping you’re helping documents and we
will get the top ready which is right
there looking good
look at us we’re pie makers
extraordinary here we go rolling or at
least getting it off of the bottom onto
your pie is by rolling it on your roller
I like this from a TV show MasterChef
junior of course cuz those kids can cook
a lot but it’s so true
it’s so much faster
I am yeah watching TV is beneficial to
baking knowledge all right well let’s
trim it and then we’ll put a little
shape in the center
okay so now that we have the top high
crest on we totally forgot to put some
butter cubes on the top so we are gonna
cut some all those up take this up
slightly and then put those in there
this is not the correct order of
procedure but it is resting we’re gonna
make it work okay
and that’s how it’s done would be to but
we’ll put some we have an awesome
stovetop popcorn strategy that we do now
yeah we sure do all popcorn all right
steady look at that one side down
I believe this is supposed to help with
the crust
I believe but we’ll see awesome now we
are good to trim and here’s Jesse put a
very cute little thumbs
so we can place down on the edges trim
them up with this little guy
and then cut some slits on the top of
the pie to let the steam escape look at
that create illustration of him you can
do it I can’t do it cream in the pie
yeah if anyone has a good trimming
technique you should let me know please
comment below with everything we’re
doing wrong I will be awesome just don’t
hate too much no one likes a hater oh oh
so you didn’t see that one that one just
didn’t happen you know people make this
seem so easy maybe it is I’m cheating
okay
she finishes that we will get stable to
other things prepared I’m making the
little cinnamon sugar our sugar and
cinnamon mixture it is two tablespoons
of sugar and a quarter teaspoon of
cinnamon I cannot find it the quarter
chaebols teaspoon so I’m improvising
that’s my cinnamon pouring that’s about
it look at that and for the top we’re
gonna do a little mini cutout here I
don’t think this is actually is this
we’re cooking there’s this a toy things
how I use it for making cookies like
sugar cookies they’re just super small
parent improvising using your children’s
toys that’s true for cutting it down
yeah a little side note look at these
cool Disney teapot this is Pat’s
chit and dark but Lumiere pretty sweet
and here is our little attempt at
cutting out the mini shape
perfect
yes he’s really known the dough for a
little hard shape are we printing little
slits in for you yes
let’s see if this actually works Oh see
it’s all for fun and pi is always yummy
even if it’s crumbly and not appealing
for the taste good exactly
now wait get somewhere she looks cute
good like you beautiful
all right here do motor baut I’m kidding
[Music]
right her polish goes there yes another
[Music]
cute coming through maybe I don’t know
let’s see what happens we may have
whoopsies
don’t be like us and do that role better
okay like we said as long as it tastes
good that end you go 15 yes
we’re too quick we need to put on the
cinnamon sugar and the condensed milk or
heavy whipping cream our heavy cream
which we don’t have so we’re using the
condensed milk so here it is everywhere
everywhere
I think it’s going yeah
number 52 air of what Sean and Jesse did
wrong with this by but if you’re like us
just give us like a like and tell your
friends to like us even though we’re not
great no pity like kidding like pity
likes
it’s like somewhat Disney inspired by
great
you’re wearing your Mickey shirt I am
you can’t see it it’s actually really
cute I’ll show you guys then next is
this good on Sam sugar one of the things
I did
I will let you do that that looks great
more than enough maybe slightly
excessive everything alright in this
game and it’s just spring I totally do
not read the tips on the website so
definitely check that out in our
description
maybe we’ll get a better result from the
bottom layer how much do you put on it
says to put it off
oh heavens this is a lot of sugar but I
guess you can improvise unless if you
would like you can save the rest for our
french toast or something we’re just
eating it home under my daughter lives
better
who doesn’t nobody okay we’re just gonna
do it we’re just gonna go for it okay
it’s gonna be sweet it’s gonna taste
amazing sweet some more sugar better
oh whoops that’s that’s
all right everyone by him done
no okay I may miss we are going back to
where we were before that’s like my
rewinding that’s for eating okay
now cook my precious 15 minutes at 425
and then something at 350 I will look at
this well let’s see the something was
you can’t really see it then reduce heat
to 350 degrees and bake for 25 to 45
minutes longer or until golden brown and
filling is bubbling and we are oh look
at that it’s getting there
we are also adding banana bread that we
did separately but yeah you may not have
had enough over there I’m close but
still examine the face that’s what I
mean many disappear you can
Mini’s here
that was a bad joke on here but they
still hurt right that looks pretty good
on this side this I made it but again
[Music]
didn’t to the side well let it cool down
and then when we do try it we will let
you know how it is
[Music]
hey everybody then the following day
I’ve been waiting all day to try to
finish by here and we are also making
some popcorn
mixture of butter and coconut oil
[Music]
yeah so let’s cut into this warming up
and add some agreement and for the
popcorn its unlinking like pretty high
setting free one of the kernels pop
we’re gonna put some more those curls in
[Music]
may or may not have looked some of the
juices and it is pretty yummy already
you pick this but are you ready I’m
gonna also pick another spot just
there’s two there’s two us do you need a
little bit of truth are cool with
something tasty yeah amazingly great but
let’s see that’s not bad we’re popping
look at this multitasking
[Music]
[Music]
done we found a new concoction by
accident cuz I spill the popcorn in the
Bay Saskatoon berry pop chlorine it
tastes like candy popcorn not bad
you can’t add more butter if you like we
find that popping it in the butter and
coconut oil makes it richer enough
flavor for us all throughout no layering
required we have both pies ready
mine is a little more deconstructed in a
tray
not visually maybe Oh
the taste is they that’s good that’s
real good first baking bug a success
mmm-hmm one tip we got from one of our
friends was to add apple cider vinegar
to the high pastry yeah she said it
makes it so that it’s a little fluffier
which we did not know we shall try that
next time mm-hmm for round two of our
Saskatoon berry pie well thanks thanks
for watching today we are going to eat
our pie
and rank or popcorn and go watch Creed 2
without any kids
there’s sleep in it’s great mm-hmm okay
well thanks again for watching have a
great evening and bow
[Music]
