How To Make A 3D Printed Cookie Cutters

hey guys Armando here from armed Cena’scookiesthis is karai she’s gonna be in myjacket during this whole thing you’renot gonna see her she’s a bit be relitbut I’m going to do a follow up to thelast cookie cutter tutorial I made thelast one was like the intro guide but atthe time of making it I didn’t realizethe website I used to create the quickmodel was going to be ending by the endof the Year 2019 so that website is goneit was cookie Caspari calm so this is alittle bit more in depth in an effort toprevent this video from being too longI’m going to basically just go throughthe process pretty fast with that reallyexplaining a lot of the whys I will tryto in the description of the video belowanswer some of the whys and then yeah ifyou have any other questions just feelfree to comment and we’re fun but umyeah let’s get into this so this is allgoing to be how to create a 3d model ofa cookie cutter the shape of your choiceand it’s all gonna be done usingwebsites that are free and softwarethat’s great so start off you need animage you want so I’m on Google Imagesand it’s Valentine’s Day season so I’mgoing to look for a heart okay so I wanta nice heart image to edit a lot easierif the image itself is varying from thebackground color so I’m going to find asimple heart image and this looks prettysimple nice little shape it’s got awhite background red heart so it shouldbe pretty simple to photoshop so rightclick you save it to my computer fromthere I will open this a program calledGIMP get this a free photo shoppingsoftware that is fairly easy to use onceyou get the hang of things I’m going toshow you everything I do in this videoto edit myimages ready for 3d model okay so yougot what background redhearteasy to edit to simplify things I liketo go to colors and threshold and adjustthis bar until I get like a nice solidblack and white image that looks prettygood so I want to completely separatethis heart from the background so I goto this paint bucket tool and I’m goingto use that to fill in the backgroundcolor with a different color so I coulduse any random color episode of pick asimple red and then everything that’snot the heart is now red and then I willgo up here to this little icon you couldalso go to select and I’m basicallygonna select my color so I’m going toselect and then select by color then youclick on the color you want to select soI’m gonna click the red so everythingthat’s right now is selected but I wantto slug the other things so I’ll go toselect and invert so now everything it’snot red will be selected and then I cango to edit and cut and that cutseverything out and then gives me thisnice clean shape of a heartso go back to select and I will selectnone go back to my paint bucket tool andnow I want to make the color blackthen I will fill it in the heart nowwe’ve got a nice solid black heart withthe red background I’m going to back toselect my color select the black andthen I will edit cut edit paste andafter you paste its new layer in thisphoto shopping software so I’ll presslayer two new layer so now we have awhole new layer of just this heart sonow I can get rid of this backgroundimage and we have this nice solid heartsothis is the part where you want howeverbig you want your cookie cutter to beyou want to make your image that big aswell so I usually make our cookie cutteris about 4.5 inches at its longestlength so I will start off by going toimage prop to contents which willbasically cut out all the excess andaround this heart so it’s the image ofthe size of the heart now I will scalemy image in this step I move my formatsto inches and I usually want my heart tobe four five five inches but for thisprocess I’m going to make it an inchbigger so it looks like the whatever thebiggest length is is the width in thisscenario so I will make this 5.5 incheswide press scale okay and now I click onthis icon which will scale the layer I’mon so I click that and then I click onthe heart and now change the formatsinches and I will now make the longestpoint the width 4.5 inches scale thatand now our heart is 4.5 inches oflength but we need to make threeseparate images starting from here soI’m going to click on this little crossicon which we’ve clicking you to dragaround so I want to Center this part asbest as I can do looks pretty good righthere now I need to make any more layersso I’m gonna click on back on thisbottom layer that we made invisible I’mgonna click this little icon down herewhich will add a new layer so click thatpress ok I’m gonna add three of thesetwo three so the one that’s all the wayon the bottom I’m going to go back to mypaint bucket tool I’m gonna make mycolor white and I’m going to make mybackground white now I’m going to goback up to this heart image I am goingto right click on this layer and pressalpha to selectionnow there’s a selection all around justthe heart chick itself I’m going to nowsave my first of three images so I’mgonna press file export as save it asheart and then I’m gonna do three ofthese so I’m going to call this heartone dot JPEG jpg is the type of file I’msaving it as then I’ll press export andsince I’m working on specific imagesizes I want the ball to be 100% and Iwill export this so that has now savedthat image here into my folder into mycomputer now I’m going to so this isstill selected now I need to make asecond image but I need to grow theselection I need to make it bigger soI’m gonna press select row and then thetype of growth I’m gonna do bymillimeters and now this next the secondimage is the size of the blade of acutter and I usually like to make ourcookie cutters one millimeter thick isthe part that cuts the cookie so I’mmaking this one millimeters thick andnow this selection has grown amillimeter bigger than the original sizeso I’m gonna go back to the paint buckettool not but I want to make the colorblack just to match it but then I clickon this second layer down here and I’llclick the paint bucket tool inside theselection and that gives me a biggerheart from the press file export asparts I’m gonna save that heart toexplore and now we’re do this one moretime this next layer is going to be forthe handle of the cutter and I usuallybasically the bigger this is the morerigid your cutters gonna be i usually goup by another six millimeters on myselection and then go down to this thirdlayer and fill that in and file exportas heart the rink[Music]now we have these three images on ourcomputer next I’m going to go to awebsite called online convert dot-com Iwill have a link to all these programsand websites down below this basically Ineed to convert these images into avector file more specifically an SVGfile so I’m going to go to this websitewhich is free to use the choose filesand then in my downloads folder where Isave them I have these free heart imagesI could just click and drag to selectall three press to choose okay so thepictures are ready for a conversion thenI click start conversion and then youcould download them individually but I’mjust a bit download them all into a zipfolder so download all files a zip andnow they are all in this folder as SVGvector files now we go to a differentwebsite called Tinkercad comthis is a free to use browser softwarethat you can model your own 3d 3d modelsso I’m going to go here I’m alreadylogged in that’s free to create anaccount click create new design allright now I’m on this work point so thefirst thing I want to do is click importand then choose a fileso my Donnell’s I’m going to go to thatfolder that we just saved those vectorfiles and I’m going to start with heartone and then work my way up to heartthree so I’ll double click on heart oneso this is where you need to startthinking of size in terms of millimetersyou could just do quick convergence bygoogling like 4.5 inches to millimetersone thing I will point out though solet’s say 4.5 inches to millimeters thatgives you a hundred and fourteen pointthree millimeters but that’s gonna bewhen you put it into this format youwant your length to be or the width thelongest dimension to be measuring thatbut you got to take into account thehandle size nowso I basically whatever the size Iwanted to be I make sure it’s about 10millimeters more in this format so Iwant my width in the case of this heartto be instead of one hundred fourteenpoint three millimeters I want to bearound 124 millimeters and I found foralmost everything I do no matter thesize if I you scale this so I put myscale by thirty one point five which isthirty to one point five percent andthat gives me a width of about onehundred and twenty four point seven it’sa little bit more than I need but it’snice to work with so first I don’t haveto work for you but for me thirty onepoint five in the scale tends to be thismagic number so I’m gonna press importso this brings the image into here andnow I could click on it and then I couldchange dimensions of this if I want butI want to change the heights of thesenow so if I click this little box in themiddle press that then I could changethis this is going to be the middle ofthe cutter of the hole so I’m going toput this in as eighteen millimeters andI’m right now it’s selected as a solidI’m gonna turn it into a hole this isbasically what I need right now and I’llpress import choose file part twoback again to the magic number of 31.5imports now I mean after this importsI’m going to click on it and click onthe center box and I like to make ourcookie cutters 16 millimeters tall seemsto be a big enough size but what we needyou could always make it bigger if youwant I’m going to do 16 enter so nowthis is 16 millimeters in height andthen I’m going to import the last onewhich is going to be the handle so heart330 1.5 imports then I click on this soour handles I like to make twomillimeters tall so if you right clickon this you can move it around and seeso we’ve got the first image which is awhole I’ll show you why that is as it isnow and we got the second layer which isthe cutter part and then we get thethird image which is our handle so if Iclick and drag around this it’s going toselect all three of those images andthen if I click this little icon righthere it will group them all together andmake it one model so I’m gonna put thatand look at that so the whole cut outthe whole middle portion and we’re leftwith the cutter part and the handle onemore important thing to do on this afteryou do this it’s gonna the image isgonna be mirrored from what youoriginally had so select it againand then click on this icon right herethat says mirror and then you’re gonnachange it this way so this little dipused to be pointing this way now it’spointing this way for a simple shapelike this it doesn’t matter too much butif you could do more complex shapes it’sreally important to remember that stepnow basically we’re set to go from herethis is the file name add the fastestappended name every time right now it’sterrific doop I’m just gonna call thispartand then I’m going to export this as anSTL so export STL now that has createdan STL file of a heart right here in mycomputer if I right click on this andpress pick look here is our 3d model andnow this is all set to put into yourslice of your software which will get itready for your 3d printer I use aprogram called Kira which is a freeprogram again and this I will basicallyfrom my folder I will click on the heartthat we just made click and drag it intothis program and here it is in ourslicer program click on this to changeyour dimensions I click and then scaleyou can scale this if you want right nowit’s showing about 100 14.3 I tend toscale these to a hundred and fifteen thelongest dimension for most of ourcutters and if you have uniform scalingchecked right hereafter you press it one dimension toautomatically adjust these others whichwill inevitably change though the Zwhich is how tall the cutter is so Ialways like to make them 16 so after Iscale it proportionally like that I willput uniform scaling and change the Zback to 16 and this is all set to go formy printer I already have my defaultsettings in I will quickly scrollthrough these for you if you want to tryto mimic what the settings we use Iprint everything with or we have a few3d printers our main ones are a brandcalled Cree ality and we use the modelCR 10 which is a highly recommended 3dprinter but both in terms of sizereliability and priceour first printer it was a lot moreexpensive and has a lot more issues soyeah so you basically they’ll say thisto a memory card and put it into yourprinter you’re ready to go I hope thatwasn’t too confusinghopefully this wasn’t too long andmonotonous monotone is I don’t
