CTF E169: Let’s Make Snickerdoodles (Cookies)!

Snickerdoodles rank pretty high up on the cookie list at Canterbury Trails Farm. These crisp cinnamon sugar cookies keep long and well and are excellent cookies to send through the mail in care packages if packed in zipper baggies and tins.

Here’s the old-fashioned recipe that we use:
Preheat oven to 400 F.
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Reserved for rolling cookie balls in: 3 Tablespoons sugar, 3 Tablespoons cinnamon

Mix butter, sugar, baking soda, shortening, vanilla, cream of tartar and eggs together. Do NOT leave out the double fats. The double fats and cream of tartar and baking soda are very important in this recipe.
Add in the flour.
Roll into balls. I used a 1/2 Tablespoon measure to achieve uniform-sized balls.
Roll the balls in the mixture of cinnamon & sugar. Place on greased cookie sheets. Flatten slightly with the bottom of a canning jar, etc.
Cook for about 10 minutes. (give or take a couple min depending on your oven).
