I own a small business with sevenemployees we make cookiesbut not just any cookies we makesugar-free cookies that diabetic skinnyactually they’re so tasty anyone canenjoy them that was the inspiration thatmotivated me to start this business yousee I’m a diabetic myself I have beenone my whole life if you think running acookie company is fun and games thinkagain I work 100 hours a week whichisn’t unusual for small business ownersI make a nice living but I’m not in itfor the money I love what I doI’d better my margins are very tightaround 1% that means I have to sell amillion dollars worth of cookies to maketen thousand dollars every penny countsliterally that’s why I get so frustratedwith government regulations now let mebe clear some regulations are necessaryespecially for obvious reasons in thefood industry but necessary andexcessive are two entirely differentthings excessive unnecessary regulationssoak up valuable hours of my time and mymoney for no good purpose that 100 hoursI work per week I asked me 36 of themare spent on compliance issues alonethis keeps me away from activities thatwould help me grow my business likesales and product development and thatkeeps me away from hiring more people myemployees are like family to me it’sthat way with most small businesses butit’s a struggle every single day I couldbe more productive and feel a lot lessanxiety if I didn’t have to fight my owngovernment or should I say governmentsfederal state and localI get the roads and the bridges of thenational defense but I don’t get whythey have to be involved in every tinyaspect of my business sometimescompeting with each other as to who canmake my life more difficult for exampleas a bakery I’m under the jurisdictionof the Food and Drug Administration FDAthe Department of Agriculture and theOccupational Safety and HealthAdministration I also have to deal withthe state health agency they all havedifferent rulesif thesecontradict one another it’s not theirproblem it’s minea few years ago the FDA inspector showedup for one of his random inspections henoticed the door to the area in which webake our cookies swung out as you walkedin he told me that was a code violationthe doors have to swing in I had 30 daysto fix it or I’d be fined thousands ofdollarsI should note we have an air curtainbetween both rooms so no food particlescan get in or out of the baking area Ipointed this out the inspector wasunmoved a few months later the inspectorfrom the AG department shows up for oneof his random inspections he noticesthat the door swings in yes I tell himit does it’s an FDA regulation no hetells me it has to swing out fix itwithin 30 days he says or you’ll befined I started keeping two sets ofdoors one that swings in for the FDA andone that swings out for the AGdepartment here’s another example theFDA requires bakeries to send a sampleof every product batch to a third-partylab for testing we make thirty sixbatches a day that means we have to send36 bags of cookies every day to that labthis cost me tens of thousands ofdollars every year and remember in orderto make $10,000 I have to sell a milliondollars in cookies we’ve never had a badtest hardly surprising making cookiesisn’t that complex the ingredients arewell known and safe I’m all for testingbut how about one bag out of every 10batches that alone might double myprofit margin to 2% one more example thegovernment demands that the type on mypackaging be a certain size fineI hired a company that does this sort ofwork to do the printing the inspectorgets out his magnifying glass anddecides the font is off by 1/100 of aninch all the packaging has to be trashedand a whole new set ordered that cost me15,000 are 1.5 million dollars inhe’s to make that money back anothertime we didn’t include the word coconutin the allergy section of the package wedidn’t think it was necessary as thesewere coconut cookies all that packaginghad to be redone toothat cost me sixty-eight thousanddollars or 6.8 million dollars worth ofcookies to make that money back I couldgo onso could anyone who owns a smallbusiness but you get the ideasmall businesses are responsible for 60million jobs we could be responsible fora lot more if the politicians you passthese laws and the bureaucrats whoenforce them would back off common-senseregulation I’m all for it excessiveunnecessary wasteful regulation I needto get back to workI’m Joseph sempre vivo president ofJoseph slight cookies for PragerUniversitythank you for watching this video tohelp keep Prager you videos free pleaseconsider making a tax-deductibledonation
